Red roses first, then camellias, every coloured petal announcing love, devotion, desire, more followed. He kept them, collected from his pillow, atop a book, pinned to his apron in the shop, all the myriad places they were left; never catching the anonymous giver.

It didn’t take genius to know where they came from, or their meaning; he was surprised the sender knew the language. Roses smelled sweet, but reminded him of death. The camellia’s scent seemed to cover the sickly odor of decay and decadence.

When the offerings withered and dried he returned them, adding a single yellow carnation.
